Ha Dub & Llesca; the unlikely meeting of Ballroom House and Grime

Voguing

DJ Mike Q’s ‘Ha Dub Rewerk’d’, apart from arguably bringing the originally New York based LGBT sub culture of Ballroom House/Voguing back to popular consciousness since the early 90s’ fleeting interest (see the Sundance Grand Jury Prize winning documentary ‘Paris is Burning’ and Madonna’s slightly less critically acclaimed ‘Vogue’),  has been steadily shaking floors since its release in 2011.

It’s early 2013 and Llesca, a Lancaster based youth (he’s only 18), who has been attracting support from Last Japan with airplay on Rinse FM, has produced a remix; which is kindly available for free download.

The remix is a stonking Grimey take on a Ballroom House banger; a well produced, high energy track that has already racked up a fair few number of plays in its month long life on Llesca’s Soundcloud.

It is also a culture clash. The idea of combining a Ballroom House track; a sub culture inseparable from its largely gay membership (and the more flamboyant end of LGBT culture to boot) and Grime; a movement not well known for embracing the LGBT community, is inspiring.

Any crowd that gets moving and shaking to this track are, whether they like it or not, tipping their hats to the voguers. Maybe they’ll even dip, drop and ‘cunt’ across the dancefloor. But even if they don’t, it is inspiring to think that music is becoming so diverse that these two opposing cultures can sit side by side, merrily moving us fans and breaking down barriers. Llesca represents a generation of producers that do not have time (or maybe knowledge) for musical prejudice and instead just get busy making.

All hail the new generation.

Three years on and still a Big Boi

It’s three years on for Big Boi’s ‘Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty’

Yet still, it remains a lingerer on the ol’ Itunes shuffle act. Through so much skip, this is an act that produces play after play.

Why Schlachthofbronx are so good

Why Schlachthofbronx are so good.

Schlachthofbronx, a Munich based duo, are not making waves. They are not the tightest producers in Europe and their music is not groundbreaking. They are, however, brilliant.

Self labelled as ‘Munich Bass’, their music touches so many genres and is a mishmash of influences; afro-beat, euro-pop, trap, dub, balkan vibes, DnB to name but a few. Unsurprisingly, their collaborations have an equally baseless sense of willingness; Gnucci Banana, Swedish “buffet rapper”, to Warrior Queen, Jamaican dancehall lyricist, and even a Bavarian brass band.

This entirely unprejudiced approach to making music feeds their production and the energy that results is undoubtedly ultra modern, ultra accessible, ultra infectious and ultra danceable.

It’s this that makes Sclachthofbronx so helplessly likable. Despite their ludicrously unpronounceable name and the occasionally offensive lyrics that they incorporate into their often short tracks, the only feeling that prevails is one of fun. They are a welcomed antidote to the stifling elitism in music that can take hold; the multicultural, multi genre approach appeals to all and excludes none. There will be no seriously cool dudes and dudettes looking immaculate at a Sclachthofbronx set, there will only be sweaty revelers with cheshire grins on there faces. All will be united in the silliness, the fun and the ridiculousness of it all.

Sclachthofbronx - the fun side of music that we are guilty of forgetting.

Mix taken from Diplo’s Radio 1Xtra show (don’t expect a critically acclaimed Ben UFO style mix, you can find that here http://www.factmag.com/2013/01/22/ben-ufo-fabriclive-67/)
